SUMMARY:A Women's Lectionary For the Whole Church
DESCRIPTION:Beginning November 29th\, we are offering a time of reflection and discussion using Professor Wil Gafney’s A Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church. Prof. Gafney is in the process of creating a new lectionary for the church\, not to replace the Revised Common Lectionary that the Episcopal Church uses every Sunday\, but as a different way of understanding various scripture passages. We will be exploring these new lectionaries beginning with Year B on Wednesdays at 11am beginning Nov. 29th in the downstairs conference area\, before the Healing Prayers and Eucharist at noon. Gafney is a deeply educated scholar of the scriptures both Hebrew and Christian and their original languages. Her purpose in these new lectionaries is to present scripture in linguistically acceptable renditions using feminist language and focusing on women. DESCRIPTION:Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and Norris Arts are hosting Empty Bowls Camas 2024 on September 17 in downtown Camas from 5:30-7:30PM.  Part of a grassroots effort started in 1990 to fight hunger locally by raising money for local food banks\, our local event is supporting Interfaith Treasure House.  Norris artists are creating unique\, handmade bowls.  Ticket purchasers will sample soups from local restaurants (Feast@316\, Natalia’s Café\, Nuestra Mesa\, Tommy O’s and others) and choose bowl to take home as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. \nPlease mark your calendars for an event that should sell out.  Tickets will go on sale on July 26 for $30.  Of course\, we will have volunteer opportunities.  Look for signups in early August.  Check out the website at www.emptybowlscamas.org and scroll to the bottom to subscribe for updates.

DESCRIPTION:  \nWhat is Orange Shirt Day? It is a national day of remembrance of Indigenous Boarding Schools. It began as a day to bring attention to the damage this residential school system did to Indigenous children\, lifeways\, and cultures. \nOn September 30th many people across Canada (Turtle Island)\, and the US wear bright orange t-shirts to honor and raise awareness of the thousands of Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools. The tradition of Orange Shirt Day was created in recognition of the untold experiences and traumas that children faced after being separated from their families. Orange Shirt Day is now an annual commemoration. \nMore information can be found at Cultural Survival.org\, the Library of Congress with a map of these boarding schools in the U.S.\, and the Orange Shirt Society.

DESCRIPTION:The Interfaith Network for Indigenous Communities invites you to attend a presentation on Indian Boarding Schools on Friday Oct 11\, 12:00 – 2:00 pm. \nWe will be hearing from: \n\nJewell James\, Lummi Nation\, Master Carver\, Activist\, Elder and boarding school survivor\nTheresa Sheldon\, Tulalip Tribes\, National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition and Tulalip Tribal Council\nEdward Washines\, Yakama Nation\, WA State Truth & Reconciliation Advisory Committee (WA Attorney General’s Office)\n\nWhen:  October 11\, 2024\, 12:00 -2:00 pm \nWhere:  On Zoom \nCost:  No Charge \nRegister here:  https://forms.gle/T1MWMRhn9eYx2M7o9 or scan the QR code in the graphic.\nPlease feel free to pass this on to your colleagues and other interested individuals. \nBios of Speakers \nJewell Praying Wolf James:  Jewell is an enrolled member of Lummi Nation.  He is an internationally renowned carver with the House of Tears Carvers and has served in various leadership capacities in Lummi Nation including Tribal Council member\, fisheries director\, and Sovereignty and Treaty Protection Office.  Jewell has advocated for preserving forests\, protecting sacred sites\, restoring and preserving tribal treaty rights and sovereignty\, advocating for salmon\, the qwe ‘lhol mechen (Southern Resident Orcas)\, Sk’alich’elh-tenaut and much more.  He is one of the subjects of a documentary\, “A Common Destiny: Walking in Both Worlds” that explores the Indigenous belief that humans and all other beings in the world share a common destiny with the Earth itself.  He has done extensive research into the Doctrine of Discovery and therefore\, Indian law and history.  He is also a boarding school survivor and carries intimate knowledge of the intergenerational trauma of his own family and himself.  “A lot of trauma was forced into our communities and a lot of children were taken right from the arms of the crying mother; and those children never came home” (2022 Sierra Club interview with Mariska Kecskes).  Jewell brought his Red Road to DC Totem Pole to Chemawa Indian School to honor graves of children who died there.  He also carved two totem poles that were gifted to Chemawa. \nTheresa Sheldon:  Theresa is a citizen of the Tulalip Tribes and an advocate for historical justice\, civic engagement\, upholding and strengthening tribal sovereignty and the trust responsibility\, and protecting sacred places. Theresa began her tenure at the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition as the Director of Policy & Advocacy in April 2022. Theresa has 16 years of experience in political advocacy\, serving in numerous roles with the Democratic National Committee\, EMILY’s List\, and Tulalip Tribes\, while also presiding as the Native American Director for the Biden-Harris Presidential Inaugural Committee. She served two terms as elected representative for the Tulalip Tribes as a Board Director and served seven years as a policy analyst for Tulalip Tribes. Theresa has been the Co-Chair for Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI) Native Vote since 2008 and was a founding member and Co-Chairperson for Native Vote\, WA. She currently serves as National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Co-Chair for the Safety & Justice Subcommittee and is on the Board of Directors for Native Americans in Philanthropy and as a Tribal Council member for the Tulalip Tribes. \nEdward Washines:  Edward is an enrolled Member of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation—member of the Wulx’wy’pum/Ka’milt’pa/ss’kin and Wenatcheepum Bands.  Edward\, currently retired\, is a respected Elder and has served 42 years with the Yakama Nation\, including 10 years as a member of the Yakama Tribal Council\, of which four were as Executive Secretary. He was a professor of Native American Studies at Heritage University\, Fall 2024. He also volunteered with the Yakama Nation Tribal School Athletic Program.  He is a graduate of Riverside Indian School\, Anadarko\, Oklahoma\, Class of 1973\, and holds a BA and M.Ed from Southwestern Oklahoma State University\, Weatherford\, Oklahoma.  He is a member of Heritage University Board of Trustees; Fred Hutch Cancer Center Tribal Advisory; CIRCLES Alliance University of Idaho Tribal Advisory Indigenous S.T.E.M. DESCRIPTION:Please help serve a hot meal to the hungry in our city! Refuel offers a free mean to all who are hungry. We serve at the Washougal Community Center next to the library and city hall. Help is needed to prepare and cook the meal\, set up the tables\, serve the guests\, and clean up. When gather together we will discuss how these helped us welcome Jesus not only into our homes for the season but also into our hearts. \nThis book from “Forward Movement” will be provided. \nAdvent Book Study materials can be picked up on Sunday 11/10 or 17. We start on Wednesday November 20 at 11am in the conference area by the church offices.
